Green, Open, Efficient.

Increasing compute demand vs. sustainability.

With the help of innovative technologies, we want to resolve the conflict between an increasing compute demand and sustainability and thereby improve the climate balance across sectors by building a distributed, green cloud infrastructure, converting existing IT infrastructure and developing innovative green IT concepts - all in terms of holistic cloud service and technology solutions.

Technology stack.

Through many years of operating our own cloud infrastructure, we have developed a broad expertise in different areas around planning, building and operating energy-efficient, open cloud infrastructures. All this experience comes together in our tech stack to enable the delivery of our products and services. Learn more below:

Krake | Alasca | Winner of the Saxon Digital Prize | Software-optimised load distribution of containerised applications | Open source project

With Krake, we have created a tool for realising the most energy-efficient virtual data centre in the world. Among other things, it consists of an orchestration engine for containerised and virtualised workloads on distributed and heterogeneous cloud platforms. The workloads to be orchestrated by Krake are aggregated and distributed according to the defined requirements (e.g. hardware, latency, costs) and the characteristics of the platforms (e.g. energy efficiency, load). The interdisciplinary team consisting of data scientists, computer scientists and electrical engineers deals with the planning, development and implementation of new features as well as the continuous further development of the intelligent software, which is closely aligned with the market.

Managed Kubernetes for container-based applications | Kubernetes Cluster | Kubernetes Hosting from Germany

Since 2019, we have been offering our customers a managed Kubernetes service for the operation of container-based applications. Our colleagues take over the entire life cycle management of a customer-dedicated cluster. This includes design, integration, deployment, operation and maintenance.

Security-hardened cloud operating system based on open source | Virtualisation of server solutions | Operation of cloud infrastructures

For the operation of our IaaS offering, we made a conscious decision to use the open source, secure de facto standard for open source clouds, OpenStack.

YAOOK Lifecycle Management Tool for OpenStack operating system | Fully automated service for updates, maintenance and commissioning of OpenStack

When operating our cloud, we quickly recognised weaknesses of "classic" life-cycle management and orchestration tools, which require a lot of manual work and are thus prone to errors. With our extensive Kubernetes skills, we recognised the potential of using Kubernetes as the basis for life-cycle management. Building on this, we created a fully automated and free OpenStack lifecycle management (LCM) - Yaook - that integrates individual OpenStack services with minimal development effort without sacrificing flexibility for orchestration. Yaook is an important step towards more digital sovereignty.

Energy-efficient and highly secure, high-availability rack server solutions for cloud infrastructures

MetalComposition of hardware components (CPU, GPU, RAM, storage), configuration, monitoring and operations

Our team takes care of the analysis, planning, commissioning and operation of our efficient IT infrastructures. The experience gained in more than a decade is always validated with the latest findings from research and development as well as with results from the open source communities. During implementation, our engineers, supported by apprentices and students, work closely together with experienced personnel from various related disciplines. Today, we can look back on air- and water-cooled server infrastructure at more than 20 locations distributed in Germany and Europe of the most diverse design - both in the building and in sea container formats.

Energy-efficient server rack solutions with hot water cooling for waste heat utilisation and subsequent use for heating purposes and highly efficient operation of server racks

Integration and operation of direct hot water cooling systems with waste heat utilisation for heating purposes. Experts from the fields of thermofluid dynamics, technical building equipment, regenerative energy systems and control and regulation are involved in evaluating existing air cooling concepts and converting them to energy-efficient water cooling technologies, as well as driving forward the further development and optimisation of our own cooling technologies. In order to ensure the stable operation of our complex digital infrastructures and the utilisation of the associated waste heat, a wide range of specialist areas within the company, such as electrical engineering, hydraulics, building services, I&C, safety technology, network and software, work hand in hand.

Krake

Maximising the energy efficiency of computing tasks with open source software.

The Krake orchestrator engine can be used to automatically manage containerised workloads on distributed and heterogeneous cloud platforms.

The open source project Krake was honoured with the Saxon Digital Award 2024 in the Open Source category.

Krake is a project of the association ALASCA, Association for Operable, Open Cloud Infrastructures e.V.

Kubernetes

Since 2019, we have been offering our customers a managed Kubernetes service for the operation of container-based applications. Our colleagues take over the entire life cycle management of a customer-dedicated cluster. This includes design, integration, deployment, operation and maintenance.

OpenStack

For the operation of our IaaS offering, we made a conscious decision to use the open-source, secure de facto standard for cloud infrastructures - OpenStack. With its various components, it enables the flexible setup and operation of public and private clouds. By using OpenStack, vendor lock-in effects can be reduced, which increases the auditability and transparency of the infrastructure and gives you digital sovereignty in the cloud.

Yaook

When operating our cloud, we quickly recognised the weaknesses of "classic" lifecycle management and orchestration tools, which require a lot of manual work and are therefore prone to errors. With our extensive Kubernetes expertise, we recognised the potential of using Kubernetes as the basis for lifecycle management. Building on this, we have created a fully automated and freely available OpenStack lifecycle management (LCM) - Yaook - that integrates individual OpenStack services with minimal development effort, without having to accept restrictions in flexibility for orchestration. Yaook is an important step towards greater digital sovereignty.

Yaook was initiated by Cloud&Heat and STACKIT. Since January 2023, the tool has been part of the independent association ALASCA e.V., and is being further developed within the open source community.

Bare Metal

Compilation of hardware components (CPU, GPU, RAM, storage), configuration, monitoring and operations.

Hot water cooling / waste heat utilisation

Competence bearers and experts from the fields of thermofluid dynamics, technical building equipment, regenerative energy systems as well as control and regulation deal with the evaluation of existing air cooling concepts as well as their conversion to energy-efficient water cooling technologies and drive the further development and optimisation of our own cooling technologies. To ensure the stable operation of our complex digital infrastructures and the use of the associated waste heat, a wide variety of specialist departments work hand in hand in-house, such as electrical engineering, hydraulics, building services, instrumentation and control, security technology, networks and software.

Our vision

Our vision is digital infrastructures that have a minimal carbon footprint and establish maximum digital sovereignty.

We achieve this by using environmentally friendly and efficient solutions that slow down the increasing resource consumption of the cloud and data centre industry and thereby reduce its carbon footprint. By consistently using open source software, we also increase transparency in the cloud and data centre market and strengthen the digital sovereignty of our customers.
